Foreigners' net claims on India rose US$ 16.5 billion to US$ 220.3 billion

India's net international investment position worsened to minus US$ 220.3 billion at end-June 2026 as foreign liabilities rose and reserves fell.

Official title: India’s International Investment Position (IIP), June 2026 · Press Release 2026-2027/1223

What happened

The International Investment Position is India's balance sheet with the world. At end-June 2026, foreigners' claims on India exceeded Indians' claims abroad by US$ 220.3 billion, US$ 16.5 billion more than at end-March. India's foreign assets were 84.6% of its foreign liabilities, down from 85.7%.

Foreign liabilities rose US$ 11.6 billion to US$ 1,432.8 billion. Direct investment in India rose by US$ 15.7 billion, while foreign holdings of Indian shares fell by US$ 14 billion. India's foreign assets fell by US$ 4.9 billion to US$ 1,212.5 billion, mainly because reserve assets dropped to US$ 668.6 billion from US$ 691.1 billion.

Reserves are still 55.1% of all foreign assets, and Indian companies' investments abroad are over a quarter. Debt now makes up 56.9% of what India owes foreigners, a share that has crept up in recent quarters.

What it means for you

No direct effect. A fall in foreign holdings of Indian shares shows overseas investors pulled back from the stock market during the quarter, which can weigh on share prices and mutual fund returns.

What it means for businesses

Steady direct investment shows foreign companies are still putting long-term money into Indian businesses. The rising debt share of India's liabilities means more interest has to be paid abroad over time.
