RBI cleared 99.9% of September applications on time

Of 16,844 applications RBI processed under its Citizen's Charter in September 2026, 16,822 were within the promised timeline; 2,666 were pending at month-end.

Official title: Processing of Applications Received Under the Citizen’s Charter Status as on September 30, 2026 · Press Release 2026-2027/1239

What happened

RBI's Citizen's Charter sets time limits for services it provides to the public and institutions, such as approvals and permissions. In September 2026, RBI started with 3,011 pending applications, received 17,200 and sent 701 back for more information, leaving 19,510 to handle. It processed 16,844: 16,822 (99.9%) within the timeline and 22 late. At the end of the month 2,666 were pending, of which 20 were beyond the timeline (17 waiting for input from outside agencies, 3 under process).

The busiest areas were currency management (7,351 applications), banker to banks and governments (7,173), foreign exchange management (2,364) and regulation and supervision (1,702). RBI also updated the charter: one service added under financial markets, eight foreign exchange services removed because banks (Authorised Dealers) can now handle them, and one timeline changed. The charter now covers 206 services.

What it means for you

If you have applied to RBI for something covered by the charter, such as a currency or foreign exchange matter, nearly all applications are being handled within the promised time. Some foreign exchange requests that used to go to RBI can now be handled by your bank.

What it means for businesses

Companies and banks dealing with RBI for approvals can expect most applications within the charter timelines. Eight foreign exchange services are now handled by Authorised Dealer banks instead of RBI.
