RBI to lend banks up to ₹50,000 crore overnight, 21 Oct
RBI announced an overnight Variable Rate Repo for up to ₹50,000 crore on 21 October, continuing to lend cash to banks.
Official title: RBI to conduct Overnight Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction under LAF on October 21, 2026 · Press Release 2026-2027/1355
What happened
RBI will hold an overnight Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auction on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. It will lend up to ₹50,000 crore, to be repaid on Thursday, 22 October.
This follows the 7-day VRR for ₹1 lakh crore on 19 October. RBI is still lending rather than absorbing cash, so the tightness in the banking system had not eased. The release says only that it is based on a review of liquidity conditions in the near term.
What it means for you
No direct effect on your savings, loans or EMIs. It is a routine step to keep banks supplied with day-to-day cash.
What it means for businesses
Banks short of cash can borrow overnight from RBI at the auction rate. Continued lending suggests short-term funding stays tight, which can keep money market rates firm.
